Tracking Contaminant Transport Backwards with an Operator-Splitting Method

Recovering the past movement of a contaminant plume from measurements its current values is challenging problem in hydrology. Moreover, modeling backwards an ill-posed due to unstable and non-unique nature resulting solution. Therefore, standard numerical methods become unstable, making it impossible simulate existing transport models with reversed time. This paper presents two major contributions solve backward problem. Firstly, stable consistent method based on operator-splitting concept which effective tracking back movement, secondly, optimal condition for choice mesh width that enables error during computer simulation stay within reasonable bound. In this paper we show that the Sinc-Galerkin method is a very effective tool in numerically solving contaminant transport equation.
